The Importance of Black Hair

A Student Project

A series of illustrations all meant to educate young white women about the cultural importance of traditionally Black hairstyles, and thus why it’s inappropriate for non-Black people to wear them.

Given the style of illustration, I felt the best place for this project to live where it would reach the right people is in a children’s book format, though it could also be impactful as a social media campaign.

Each spread in this book board describes and illustrates a traditionally Black hairstyle, where it originated, and why it’s significant to the culture.

Included in this research is also the history of discrimination against natural Black hair in the United States, and how that contributes to this issue.
